Mattavona's story
- An ancient legend -
Also commonly known by the name of the Witch of Vesuvius, that of the Vecchia 'e Mattavona is a story that finds its origins in the eruption of 1858.
The eruption to which the legend refers was of such intensity that, according to what has been narrated and which has come down to the present day, it filled the enormous ravine called "Fosso Grande" with lava. Legend has it that the inhabitants of the area began to hear a cry.
The scream was punctually repeated every night, preventing the inhabitants from resting. The inhabitants turned to her to appease the nocturnal howl. The woman accepted their request for help.
Pronouncing a series of archaic formulas, incomprehensible to the ears of those present, the old witch managed to put an end to the phenomenon, allowing the people of the Vesuvian area to go back to sleeping peacefully. That of the witch in Vecchia 'e Mattavona is a story that has crossed not only local national borders, but has even flown overseas.
In fact, her figure inspired the American designer Carl Barks who in 1961 gave life to Amelia, "the witch who bewitches".
